Used to, be used to, get used to

In Japan, people are used to eating raw fish.
 


Muchas personas confunden las diferentes variaciones de la palabra USE. No es de extrañar- es un punto de la gramática inglesa que afecta también al vocabulario en inglés.

Vamos a aclararlo todo hoy.

1. USED TO + VERBO
Ya sabemos que USED TO (pasado) con un verbo significa alguna cosa que antes hacías y ahora ya no lo haces. Es como decir Jugaba al futbol o Solía jugar al futbol.

2. BE USED TO + VERBO+ ING
Ahora empieza la confusión: TO BE USED TO DOING SOMETHING significa que ya te has habituado a algo que otras personas pueden considerar como difícil o desagradable. NO significa suelo hacer…. Sorry, no, aunque muchas personas piensan que es así.

¿Unos ejemplos? OK

  • Jimmy loves parachuting. He is used to jumping out of a plane.
  • = A Jimmy le encanta el paracaidismo. Está acostumbrado a saltar de un avión.
  • Karen is an ambulance driver. She is used to seeing terrible car accidents.
  • = Karen es conductor de ambulancia. Está acostumbrada a ver unos accidentes de coche terribles.
  • I’ve lived in Canada all my life. I’m used to the cold winters.
  • = He vivido en Canadá durante toda mi vida. Estoy acostumbrado a los inviernos fríos.

Hasta aquí ¡perfecto!

3. GET USED TO + VERBO+ ING
Esta construcción es similar al nº2 y significa que te estas acostumbrando a algo, todavía no estás acostumbrado del todo.

  • It took me a long time to get used to starting work at 7 am.
  • = Tardé mucho tiempo en acostumbrarme a empezar a trabajar a las 7 de la mañana.
  • This machine is a little difficult to use sometimes. You’ll get used to it.
  • = Esta máquina es un poco difícil de usar a veces. Ya te acostumbrarás a ella.
Pasado
I GOT USED TO LIVING IN CHINA AND DIDN’T WANT TO RETURN HOME AFTER 3 YEARS.
 

4. One more… USE = utilizer, usar, emplear

  • I used a knife to open the box.
  • = Usé un cuchillo para abrir la caja.
  • This instrument is used to measure blood pressure. OR This instrument is used for measuring blood pressure.
  • = Este instrumento se emplea para medir la tensión arterial.
