In every language they are difficult because they seem so ARBITRARY!!
Remember:
on Friday = the day of the week
on the 4th of September = the day (again!)
on my birthday = the day (again!)
in March = the month
in 2016 = the year
in spring = the season
at Christmas
on Chrtistmas day = the day (again!)
at the weekend = in Britain they say at
on the weekend = in the USA they say on
